![]() ![]() In the past two decades the literature shifted away from discussions revolving around the influence of other cultures on the Maya to increasingly more particularistic Maya-centric research. aya studies over the past several decades can be seen to have undergone paradigmatic shifts in focus. While not refuting the valuable economic function of obsidian in Maya society this paper also discusses the way this valued item may have encoded ideas of identity and symbolised a Teotihuacan-centred hegemony of allied cities. Using a functional contextual viewpoint to analyse the shifting patterns of obsidian distribution, this paper reexamines the role Teotihuacan may have played in influencing the obsidian industry in the Maya area. Looking at the shifting patterns of obsidian source utilization in the Late Formative and Early Classic periods this paper identifies a pivotal, and long overlooked, key to understanding the broader implications of this shift. It has been long advocated that Teotihuacan, by way of Kaminaljuyu, influenced the Maya obsidian industries in Highland Guatemala and altered the pattern of source utilization for economic reasons. Alternately identified as high status trade goods, an ideological symbol, and a utilitarian domestic item, obsidian may also be a marker of interregional affiliations. While archaeologists generally agree as to the ubiquity of obsidian in archaeological collections there is less agreement as to the implications of its presence in ancient Mesoamerican communities. Clearly, not all blades from this ritual deposit were blood-letters, which raises questions about the manner in which such a ritual deposit was formed and the nature of ritual activity associated with caching behavior at Classic period Maya sites. Although some blades were used to let blood, the edge and surface wear on most of the used obsidian blades are consistent with other functions, including cutting meat/skin/fresh hide, cutting or sawing wood and dry hide, cutting or sawing other soft and hard materials, and scraping hard materials. The obsidian blood-letters recovered from the cache were used in cutting, piercing, and piercing-twisting motions. The results of the analyses indicate that some blades from the cache may have been used to let blood however, not all obsidian blades appear to have been used in the same way. 550–650 CE) dedicatory cache at the site of Pook's Hill, Belize, serve as a test case to explore the relationship between obsidian blades and ancient Maya auto-sacrificial blood-letting. The technological and use-wear analyses of 48 obsidian blades recovered from a Late Classic (c. In contrast, microscopic use-wear analysis of lithic artifacts can be used to examine blades for evidence of their use, and-provided comparative experimental data are available-to determine if they were blood-letters. Such a deductive approach does not provide a means to determine whether individual blades were used to let blood. Most evidence supporting this interpretation is circumstantial and derives from iconographic and ethnohistoric sources. A B S T R A C T When recovered from ritual contexts at ancient Maya sites, obsidian blades are frequently viewed as blood-letters used for auto-sacrifice. ![]() so Xbox Series X and PS5 versions of the game at the very least seem likely. Lie-flats seats are also true to their name - they rotate 180 degrees to create a "bed" to sleep on. You'll mainly find these on domestic and short-haul routes. They have more space than economy (3-4 inches wider) and more legroom (15-20 inches), which sometimes comes with a footrest. With both premium cabins, you can expect to find recliners, lie-flats, and/or suites. ![]() First Class seatsĪh, the seats - this is by far the biggest reason to choose between first class and business class. Once on board, the flight attendants will escort you to your seats, hand you a complimentary drink and guide you through your experience on the flight. On the plane, as a first class passenger, you’ll have the choice of boarding first or last, and may even board the plane via a different jet bridge. (In some cases, like with American Airlines, business class passengers can pay extra for personalized/transport service). Passengers have to wait in line for security clearance (albeit they may have shorter lines), and flight attendants greet them at the plane's entry.įirst class, on the other hand, lets you skip the security line-up, have a personal assistant that escorts you to departure gates, ride carts to get through the terminal, and luxury cars for airport transfers. ![]() First Class boardingīusiness class boarding is quite similar to economy. If your airport does have a separate first class lounge, expect it to be a tad better than the services in the business lounge. You'll need to do a little googling before your flight to know exactly what you're getting (especially since services have changed post-covid). But, first class lounges have the added bonus of a guest/pet pass, private security screening, personal assistants, private car airport transfers, fine dining, and other luxury services. You can expect to find buffets, rest areas, shower suites, workspaces, and play areas in both lounges. Long-haul international flights are likely to have dedicated first and business class lounges. The lounges are usually not separated for smaller airports, but they may have separate sections for first class, with better food and personalized service. But whether you get a separate first class or business class lounge will depend on your airline, its alliance, and your itinerary. The main differences between business class and true first class fall into seven categories:įlying either business or first class grants you access to airport lounges. To keep things short and sweet, we’ll mainly be covering true first class (international/long-haul flights) in this article. It’s no wonder a cabin labeled as ‘first class’ on a domestic route can also be called a business class cabin on short-haul flights. This usually means reclining chairs and smaller lounges but none of the bells and whistles you’d typically find on an international first class flight (aka true first class).ĭomestic first class is basically equivalent to a short-haul business class cabin, minus the lie-flat seats. At this point, you'll probably wonder (or, more realistically, google) what's the difference between business vs. You double-check your tickets because there must have been a mistake - but no, this is a ‘first class’ seat. But instead, you're met with just a little extra legroom and a half-decent entertainment system. Imagine you've scored a great deal on first-class tickets - you're ready to be chauffeur driven between airports and waited on hand and foot. # Years followingĮventually, I migrated to Sublime as it's plugin system was awesome throughout the following years I tried out all of the above options I mentioned. Vim and Emacs felt foreign at first, Notepad++ felt clunky, and Sublime for some odd reason was not clicking. I wasn't sticking to one language for an extensive period either so no "holistic IDE" solution felt right. It was a mess, but I persevered swapping editors like hotcakes until I figured out what I liked. Now around 16, with a few years of working in these environments under my belt, I had more insight into what mattered in an editor to me. Instead of focusing on the specific technology or project I was working on at that time, I decided to formalise to myself what I wanted from a general editor. In the end, my list of requirements looked something like this for my dream editor: If you are looking to choose a long-term editor, I think making a list like this is helpful! # Choosing my requirements I was hoping that formalising this list would help me make a more permanent decision as I'd moved around a lot in the years past. I think a lot of these are self-evident, I just had to choose what matted to me. I want to give a bit more context to one of these: cross-platform as it was hugely influential in my decision. Not only did I want something "cross-platform" in that it could run on Windows, OSX, and Linux, but I also wanted something that could work from the CLI and on multiple Linux distros.Ī bit before this I was diving into system administration for the first time. Using a small home server, running on an old desktop from my grandmother, I was diving head-on into a new world. It was huge, exciting, and full of intricate puzzles ready to solve. Where you get one letter wrong and suddenly no results.Fiddling around in nano felt inefficient for certain things, particularly when trying not to use my mouse in the CLI, I needed something better. Fuzzy search should fix that, so I'm glad you have it. We also are currently working on fixing typos. We predict the possibility of the current char being a typo and try to find the word you were trying to type. However, this is also hard and we are still experimenting with it. Sounds like you need a lemmatizer in your indexing, which would give you singular/plural/past/present results for cheap. Synonyms would be a killer feature, though not sure how you'll do that since my synonyms will be different than someone else's. Could you not allow the user to specify their own synonyms in a setting somewhere? Might be a quick win. ![]() We were thinking of having a maximum of 1-2 synonyms per word (the most probable ones) for common words (top 10k words). In our own notes, we are actually adding the synonyms manually. When I write some heading I will add some synonyms so I can find them better. This is a problem that we need to iterate multiple times in order to get right. Otherwise, it will worsen the experience. If you decide to try Nota, I would love to get your feedback! You can write to us at that makes sense and it works now! Thank you so much for the feedback, ideas, and knowledge. I'm not too fond of having to enter a preview mode everytime though, would it be possible to automatically render these tables when not "focussing" on them (by having the cursor inside the table)? I don't know how else to describe it, but I would prefer it much more if they work like the LaTeX $$ blocks (rendered when cursor is elsewhere, expand to reveal the "source code" when clicked, re-render when cursor moves outside again).Įdit: Another thing I just noticed is that when selecting a bunch of lines of text with a LaTeX block somwhere in the selection, the block will first expand when the cursor is moved over the block, but when expanding the selection some more past the block, the rendered LaTeX will appear again. This (visually) creates an interrupted selection highlight and makes understanding what exactly is copied unintuitive in my opinion. I would much prefer it if LaTeX blocks stay unrendered as long as (a part of) it is within a selection. The same would go for tables, if a feature like I said above is ever implemented. Let me know if I should put these requests on GitHub as well. ![]() Though it doesn't have those other features. ![]() I do use it both on iOS and macOS, and when I need those more advanced editing, I will often hop over to BBEdit or the like.
